System/Site Requirements

This website has two versions:  a New Broadband Version and the Classic Version.  Choose the best one based upon your Internet connection type and versions of software installed.

New Broadband Version
This version works best if you are connected to the Internet via a local area network (LAN) connection, or a DSL or cable modem connection.   If you use this version and connect via a telephone line and modem, it may take a while for the presentations to begin playing.  In addition you must have the following versions of software installed to use this version:

  • Windows NT 4.0 (with SP6a), 98, ME, 2000, XP or later
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.4 or later (NO Real Player)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or later) or Netscape Navigator 7.0 (or later)
  • Sound Card and Speakers

  • Video Display is Optimized for 800x600 or higher Pixel Setting

The following software is required to playback these presentations on a computer running the Mac OS X operating system:

  • Mac OS X v10.2
  • Windows Media Player for Mac OS X
  • Internet Explorer 5.2.2 (or later) for Mac
  • Sound Card and Speakers

Classic Version
This version works best if you are connected to the Internet via a telephone line and modem.  It will also work with a broadband connection like a local area network (LAN) connection, or a DSL or cable modem connection.   In addition you must have the following versions of software installed to use this version:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 or newer (IE 6 or newer recommended)

  • Windows Media Player (NO Real Player) (version 6.4+ recommended)

  • Sound Card and Speakers

  • Video Display is Optimized for 800x600 Pixel Setting

Problems With Internet Explorer Version 5
IE version 5 does NOT properly display the graphics on some of the web pages.  It will not display the Sections Helpers and may leave out graphics on other slides.  Please upgrade to Internet Explorer version 6 to fix this problem.

Windows Media Player v9 Issues on the Classic Version
You may see video artifacts (blotches) during play back when using Windows Media Player v9.  There is no resolution to this and it should not substantiality impact the usability of the presentations.

If the audio doesn't' play:
In order to hear the presentations Windows Media Player needs to download and install a driver (codec) from http://codecs.microsoft.com. WMP will try to do this automatically the first time you try to view a video.

When using Windows XP or Windows 2000 Workstation for this to be successful, you must be able to connect to the site (above) and you must be logged into your PC with an account with local administrator permissions (you must have permissions to install new programs on your computer.) If you cannot do either one of these, you will need to contact your network administrator.

Netscape Issues on the Classic Version  (Problems with Windows Media Player & Netscape)
LearntoSubnet uses an embedded Windows Media Player.  By embedding the player into a web page the presentation loads automatically when you access the presentation's web page.

This feature works properly in all version of Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player.  However, it does work properly in all versions of Netscape.  It does work in version 4.0x of Netscape when using Windows Media Player version 6.4.  If you use any newer versions of Netscape or Windows Media Player (7) the presentation will not load automatically.  One way to resolve this is to use Internet Explorer.

If you do use Netscape you will need to start each presentation manually by clicking on this link on each presentation page:

Problem with the Apple Mac
Windows Media Player may not  properly display the video associated with these presentations.  The Broadband Version does NOT have this problem.
